Notton I am just truly baffled why would you voluntarily and publicly humiliate yourself as a country. Flip-flopping on an issue so rapidly means you have no morals and bow to whoever offers the most monetary incentive. Voters hate that. Reply

Flip-flopping on an issue so rapidly means you have no morals and bow to whoever offers the most monetary incentive. Voters hate that. What if I told you the flip-flop was caused by the voters themselves? That's the big detail Morales missed here in his reporting: There was an election in the Netherlands last week, where the right-wing parties in government (who instigated the nationalization) took a beating. The centrist parties are likely to form a government with maybe one of the previous government's parties (that hasn't been in opposition for nearly two decades). It's certainly possible their technocratic free-trade tendencies are showing. Still, it's just as likely the whole Nexperia situation has been unpopular with Dutch voters, who didn't want to pick a fight with China, and saw the government's implied kowtowing to US demands as humiliating. I see all this as an attempt to clean house after the election will likely change leadership. Reply
phead128 so US basically pressured Dutch via US imposed 50% export control law to seize Nexperia ownership, only for Trump to throw the Dutch under the bus by cancelling the 50% export control law as part of trade deal with China. The humiliation can't get worse huh? Reply

The humiliation can't get worse huh? There is plenty of room for things to get worse. I wouldn't be surprised if more US involvement is leaked in the future. IMHO the best position for Netherlands is to take no side in this battle of the giants. Be friendly to both sides; focus on maximizing economical benefits for its citizens. Don't let ideology get in the way. Reply

evilpaul Didn't the Dutch try to steal the company under some "foreign troops are matching on the capital; we're at war" law and forget that all the factories where the chips were actually made were all in China? This is burglar gets paralyzed falling through a sun roof levels of incompetent thievery. Of course the US was involved. Europe doesn't do anything without being told what to do by Washington. Washington is just flailing wildly, and still denying the reality that the West needs the bogeymen countries more than the other way around. And people complain about Beijing not respecting sacred IP laws.🙄 Reply
pug_s This is really a big loss for Netherlands and the EU in the long run. Nexperia had invested in the wafer plants throughout the EU since their acquisition. If they are smart, they cut the jobs and will be producing the wafers in China instead in the future. Maybe some research jobs exists but they will be moved to China now. No doubt that there will C-suite guys in the Netherlands will lose their jobs and the people who will replace them will be more aligned with China. Reply
