The analog feel of discs reminds us of times when ownership actually meant something. Since our modern tech isn't equipped to interface with these relics, an external disc drive with a modern USB-C interface is a great investment, and we've found just the deal. Woot has this generic external CD/DVD on sale for just $9.99 , down a whopping 55% from its original list price.
Play all your old CDs and DVDs while preparing for the impending AI apocalypse, where everything digital will be turned against you. Harness the power of DVD 8x and CD 24x speeds to read and write your favorite media to a tangible storage medium, all via convenient USB-A or USB-C.
This is the cheapest external disc drive we've ever seen. Still, despite its menial ask (and white-labelled nature), it's not cheaply-made. The company here is "Laurensory", but it's just an OEM product made by the same factory that manufactured the previous external drive deal we've covered .
As such, it features a USB 3.0 interface that terminates in a standard Type-A connector, but Laurensory provides a Type-C adapter in the box. That enables write speeds of up to DVD 8x and CD 24x, so 11 MB/s and 3.6 MB/s, respectively, which is enough to play back anything. Since this is a writeable drive as well, you can even burn your own media or files onto empty discs or overwrite existing ones with something fresh.
There's an LED indicator upfront for read/write activity, along with the eject button. The entire unit also has a sleek metallic finish that looks rather clean, and there are rubber pads underneath to prevent skidding on desks. All of this adds up to a well-rounded solution that has over 5,000 positive Amazon reviews already.
Lastly, this bad boy is compatible with a wide range of operations systems as well, including Windows, Mac, and Linux, so virtually every computer or laptop in the world is covered. So, if you hate perpetual licenses and want to actually access, not just hold, what you own, then Laurensory's $10 external DVD/CD drive is the perfect tool to gaze into the past.
