SonoraTechnical Well see. If municipalities start taking out bonds to assist producers in bulding new plants or increasing production at existing plants… then we'll know the american people are in fact paying for it.. Like the Tariffs…. there is bragging about the amount of money the gov't is taking in… and no discussion about well that is an 'import tax' passed on to the importers and then ultimately paid for by the american people as higher prices. America First isn't going to necessarily mean citizenry first… It might mean Captains of American Industry first… let's see how this all plays out. We've already been warned in southern arizona that our electricity rates and water rates that are increasing…. and Amazon hasn't even starting building project blue yet… this is just the producers getting ready for it… So, we've already started paying more due to AI… how will this be corrected? Could be that existing laws already provide enough room for the appropriate agency to create the necessary regulations. But, it shouldn't be a different agreement negotiated with each datacenter operator. Reply
SomeoneElse23 How is this a federal level issue? Seems like the states should be handling it. Reply

Congress seems to have a history of regulating them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_Policy_Act_of_1992 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_Policy_Act_of_2005 The former of which: required transmission line owners to allow electric generation companies open access to their network And the latter of which contains a provision that: It sets federal reliability standards regulating the electrical grid (done in response to the 2003 North America blackout) Reply
JamesJones44 Without enforcement, these companies are not going to eat those costs. They may start by doing it out of good will, but when competition heats up or Wall St. starts pushing for profitability it will go out the window. Reply
Roland Of Gilead I would disagree with practically 99.9% of what Donnie says or does, but on this one, I'm in complete agreement. In my country currently, 21% of our total power usage is for data centres. Although they do pay higher rates, it's the general consumer who foots the bill. In the space of 3 years, electricity cost for general consumers has trebled. Its about time these companies foot their bill and more. We deserve some credit (monetary) for keeping the lights on in these places. Reply

But what he says and what he does don't always match up. I think the key thing to watch will be electricity prices. If they keep going up, it doesn't matter what he says – people won't be fooled when they get their bills and they won't be happy. Reply
bigdragon Utility costs in Maryland went up 37% last year. They're about to go up again because it's a new year. I'm so tired of corporate greed. I don't care if it's data centers or sports teams — make them all pay their own way without any special treatment. Corporations have never had as much money as they do right now. We don't need to help them. Reply
