Two brothers convicted of running ghost gun factory that produced untraceable 3D printed firearms
Scientists attempt to link 3D printed ghost guns to specific filament brands with chemical fingerprinting
His biggest fear is that 3D printing will be removed from schools in order to prevent children from learning how to use the technology and creating harmful things. “If kids don't have access to additive manufacturing, they will not be competitive on the global stage. We will not be able to innovate and allow ourselves to grow. We will not be able to think of the most amazing things that we haven't even thought of yet.”
Tobin did an impact analysis of the California bill, which is available to download from the 3D Printing Nerd’s YouTube channel . Over 1.5 million California children and 30,000 businesses use 3D printing and additive manufacturing. He revealed a staggering $10.5 billion in sunk costs, money already invested by the state of California and its aerospace, medical, and technology giants into additive hardware and specialized software that could be rendered obsolete in a heartbeat. These businesses may be forced to leave the state to avoid having equipment banned or products flagged by government software looking for “bad shapes.”
“Can you imagine that on your network?” he questioned. “Can you imagine that in your business when you're doing your R&D, and you're trying to develop a new prosthetic or something like that, and it flags it?”
The turmoilAB 2047 could unleash on 3D printing is not restricted to California. Washington, New York, and Colorado are also exploring bills to prevent 3D-printed firearms. Historically, when California takes a stand on technology, safety, or the environment, the rest of the country follows. Manufacturers may feel it's easier to comply with California law for every printer sold in North America, effectively ending the era of Open Source as we know it.

garrett040 California is so retarded, the 2nd amendment clearly states it's the right of the public to keep and bear arms. That includes self made arms. Pretty black and white there. Reply
ezst036 California is also a leader in pushing OSs to doxx people through age verification. Idiots. Reply

Pretty black and white there. And on top that, there are plainly first amendment issues with trying to control and restrict what files people have, or software they can run on, on their own machines. BloodLust2222 I frankly don't understand why anyone would live in or support the Socialist Nazi Clown State of California. What I love even more, Is the very people that voted in all these nuts are leaving in droves to infect their crazyness into other normal states. Reply
Edric26 Impossible to integrate and reliably work as intended without causing all sorts of stupidity and headache. Likely to cost much, much more than the most generous projections. Effective? Quite likely very effective in disrupting research and development, education, and just about any other thing enjoying the flexibility 3d printing offers, at best destroying efficiency to such degree that 3d printing is abandoned for other processes. Might kickstart a "bad idea knock-on effect", CNC machines and other manufacturing technologies will be big brothered next, for the chillun. Only possible to enforce if they're able to remove a couple of amendments from the Constitution. Trivial for just about anyone with a bit of technical aptitude to remove or bypass, because if someone were going to make an illegal weapon with a regulated and surveilled printer, why in the world would they not? I don't even use 3d printers yet but I can probably find plenty more wonderful reasons this is silly, the best reason being that this is completely silly and won't do anything besides cost money and make 3d printing too much of a hassle. I don't buy the whole "lawmakers don't actually understand the real impact" issue here. They absolutely do and someone needs to look closer. A technology this impactful doesn't get squashed like this out of ignorance, not even for the chillun. Follow the money. Just saying. I'm also healthy, not suicidal and have no enemies, just in case I disappear. Reply
