RoLleRKoaSTeR This is great news. Too bad I see more warehouses being built where the infrastructure (roads) can't take it. What are these for…storing rubber dog poop from Hong Kong? IYGIYGI Reply
redgarl Just pure denial from people who have no clue what they are voting for. Want it or not, datacenters are going to expend elsewhere and americans are going to lose investments, and all this based on misconception or ignorance. If you really wanted price of energy to stay low, you should had invest in green energy instead of oil! The most ironic is people believing datacenters are DRINKING water when water is only used to cool components in closed loops… welcome to the social media era where critical thinking has been replaced by believes… Reply

Are we expected to believe that an industry that starts clearcuttings, starts putting up their centers, and fires up power generators, all WITHOUT getting the permits first, are making an exception to their mad rush when it comes to conserving water? And that's not even touching on noise and air pollution, and the "easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission" approach to setting up data centers. Ultimately, for all that, what are they offering? There's borrowing and borrowing, and, somehow, an inability to provide much that's useful without labeling EVERYTHING as AI and shoving it into places where it's not needed. @bigdragon has it right. They did this to themselves. Reply

The Tech Bros have an amazing prophet. They should offer you a house in the middle of the largest data center to enjoy life there!! Reply
alrighty_then Generalizing… Nobody wants a data center in their backyard. ….but… Everybody wants AI. Solutions? Outsource to poor countries. Sure it may run a little slower but NIMBYs are happy. Or pay extra to build it in space! Such are the tradeoffs. Reply

Sure it may run a little slower but NIMBYs are happy. Or pay extra to build it in space! Such are the tradeoffs. The major problem with building power hungry data centers in space is that you're purely limited by the amount of solar panels you can put on it. Plus you're also limited by the amount of heat you can dissipate. Since there's no medium to transfer heat away from a device other than thermal radiation, which is a slow process even though it's like -455F in space. There's no air or water or anything to absorb heat and take it away from the satellite. So it would just sit there baking in its own heat unless you build massive surface radiators with liquid pumps to move the heat out of the core and into the radiators spread all over the surface of the ship. In the end, Musk's idea to put data centers in space is just completely impractical unless you use a radio isotope generator (the "nuclear battery" Voyager 1 & 2 are powered by) to produce the baseline power you need along with solar panels. So that adds even more heat into the equation to dissipate, not to mention now you have plutonium floating around in space that could come crashing back down and spread nuclear material over a small area. Still, I wouldn't want one of these massive places in my back yard either. Reply

As another user pointed out, evaporative cooling is common. Topic research is something we all take for granted in the 21st century, but we all have the tools to do it. Reply
thestryker Just skimming an overview of these votes and it seems like most of them are restricting the size/power consumption. It makes sense to target this as we've had data centers around for years, but the big thing changing is scale and utilization rate. It's quite rational for people to react this way when they're getting steamrolled when it comes to build outs as this is a measure of control. I doubt most of this legislation will have a big impact on buildouts, but it will force companies building data centers to be more mindful. Reply
