TCA_ChinChin They'll probably be able to grow a great deal due to the NAND shortage but I doubt they'll be able to surpass Samsung and SK that quickly or even at all. Reply
hotaru251 i mean if it had Chinese gov backing it could be possible but still a large scale goal. I wish them well though as more nand benefits every consumer in end. Reply
thestryker I think the key question is whether or not there's enough demand within China to support this expansion. While the world always needs storage the level of demand we're seeing now is unprecedented and likely to not continue. The last NAND collapse was bad enough that the big three lowered production capacity and stopped shipping NAND because they would be selling it at a loss. With a big increase in worldwide capacity what happened then could look like the good old days in comparison should it happen again. Reply
cyrusfox Too bad about the consolidation here, wish Intel held on to NAND and Optane, how foolish they look now getting rid of these commodities (Storage/memory) which now command insane margins. Reply

Selling off their NAND business was the right thing to do at the time. While the need from enterprise was there nobody could see the massive supply constraint coming. Keep in mind this deal was made before the floor dropped out in 2023. They still own everything regarding Optane, but they had never built 3D XPoint production facilities. The time to do that would have been 2018-2020 when IMFT was ending. By the time Gelsinger was hired it was too late for it to make any sense at all. Reply
