If you failed you could retake the final. The problems required you to think so there was no real time limit, occasionally a student would forget some proof and sit there for hours coming up with it from scratch. And if you're a poor test taker? Sick that day? Obviously AI cheating is a major problem for education, but tests still measure a proxy which tells a partial story. Reply
warezme The solution is simple. Have exams and finals with no computer devices available. At my school, smart watches, phones and computers can and are removed. You get the books and your notes if the professor allows it and you read and write your answers down. AI no problem. If the professors are lazy and want to do everything remote and electronic, guess what. People cheat. Reply

Having hard problems with more time to think (say an hour or more per problem) tests actual knowledge and skill, rather than ability to quickly give expected answer. And I did say one could retake the exam. The last part is very important if you care about individuals. Reply
