(Image credit: LG) 4K monitors have become commonplace in the broad consumer market, and we’ve even seen 5K options slowly creep into the professional and enthusiast markets. However, LG is looking to make the next big leap with a new 6K monitor: the LG UltraFine evo 6K (32U990A). This isn't the first 6K monitor to hit the market, but it is the first to also debut with Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. The new monitor is available now for $1,999.
Packing a 6,144 x 3,456 resolution into a 32-inch panel is pretty bonkers (that's more than 2.5x as many pixels as you’d find on a 4K monitor), with the panel boasting a pixel density of 224 ppi. For reference, a 32-inch 4K panel has a pixel density of 140 ppi.
You won’t find an OLED or QD-OLED panel here; instead, LG provides the next best thing: an IPS Black monitor with a contrast ratio of 2,000:1, or roughly twice that of standard IPS monitors. In addition, LG claims that the 32U990A is VESA DisplayHDR 600 compliant, while supporting 98 percent of DCI-P3 and 99.5 percent of sRGB.
Regarding Thunderbolt 5 support, the 32U990A can receive its video signal, power, and also connect to other devices through a single cable. Not only do you get Thunderbolt 5 daisy chaining (with support for up to 120 Gbps transfer speeds and 96-watt Power Delivery), but you also get DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR 13.5 DSC), HDMI 2.1, and three USB-C ports.
Monitor manufacturers are usually quick to provide utilities and software controls for Windows users, but macOS users are often left out. That isn’t the case with the 32U990A; LG offers Studio Mode color tuning that is compatible with Macs, and its M-Control feature in the LG Switch software suite allows you to control the monitor’s brightness and even the onboard speakers using your Mac keyboard.
The 32U990A is available for purchase today, with a price tag of $1,999 . To put that in perspective, the Asus ProArt 32 6K is $1,299 , the Dell UltraSharp 32 6K (Thunderbolt 4) is $2,800, and the Apple 32 Pro Display XDR is $4,999 (DisplayPort 3).
