The CPU clearance measured from the IHS, so there's thickness of the CPU, socket, motherboard, standoffs, backplane, gap and then the back cover if we measure all the way from outside to outside, that's like 1.8cm difference in total. thestryker I can somewhat understand case manufacturers lowballing the measurements as there are plenty of different platforms which can be used and no guarantee how cooler height is measured. In some cases it may also be that the cooler height doesn't particularly matter (the Frame 4000D for example has a rated height of 170mm which is already enough for every cooler Noctua sells). Getting it wrong from the other direction though has a much higher chance of being a problem. Smaller cases are the wildcard in this as both being wrong has the potential to be a problem. The tolerances being tighter can be a tricky thing and every mm can matter (my Deskmini "supports" 47mm coolers and I did get it to fit, but it was hard to get the side over it and it presses against). Small differences could mean a difference between cooler classifications. Sometimes even here though the measurements don't necessarily mean much though. In their example of the H2 Flow the case is designed for liquid cooling and has a glass panel over the socket restricting air cooler use so the extra space isn't enough to fit a better cooler. Reply

Mr Giggles It seems like a good idea for manufacturers to give a little more room than the specs dictate. you have amateurs installing the equipment. you have a whole variety of 3rd party coolers being installed. And I don't how much more +4 mm would've got you. Of course overstating the specs would bring on issues. when buying a cooler you need to find the one guy in the reviews with your case to verify. Eximo Motherboard thickness does vary a little depending on the board's layers. The Haswell era was certainly an issue. A lot of coolers were built for Ivy Bridge and earlier which tended toward thicker boards. Some change in manufacturing reduced board thickness and a lot of coolers needed washers added to the back of the motherboard to achieve enough pressure. Also manufacturing tolerances on the chassis. The presses and molds will slowly wear out over time too. I would think the tempered glass side panel cases would be as precise as possible. I can't imagine how many have been broken by people putting in too tall a cooler and closing it up at the last step only for the pointy end of a heatpipe to shatter it. Reply
