People are downloading more RAM on cheap used hardware and you're complaining! Another angle from this is that there could be some legitimately defective components on any card you try this on. I don't know whether it's the memory or controllers or something else. Reply

I don't know whether it's the memory or controllers or something else. not saying it's not a nice found , it is , if I had 170hx I'd be trying it , but I only got 90hx and 50hx , I just can't trust a company that openly cripple the hardware they sell and people that buy them (LHR) , what I do with my GPU is none of their concern , and needing a bios mod to unlock full potential of a 170hx is just another demonstration of that , don't have an issue with the tech but with the corporate attitude Reply

You buy it knowing exactly what performance and specs you are getting. All they did was reprice defective hardware at a cheaper price. This wasn't malicious or deceptive … they simply wanted to reduce waste. Think of it like this … if the hardware was working perfectly without any issues, why would they sell it at a discount instead of as a fully fledged flagship model? I hacked bios might restore the card to a semi-working condition … as they seem to have done with the vram. But there could also be other stability issues that Nvidia knows could happen and they would rather not have to replace a defective $4000 GPU with another $4000 GPU under warranty … much easier to just make another model at half the price for the price conscious consumer that is rock solid and disable the defective parts that would lead to a warranty claim. Company's are paying for the wafer; you don't throw out chips that did not meet the highest spec. AMD rebranded the Athlon 750 into a 500, 550, 600Mhz model as well, because that was cheaper rather then either binning lower end models or re-create specific those models. The little gem inside of it was the OC headroom those chips offered, going often beyond 750Mhz even. I'm sure there's software out there to test and address any unusable sections of the RAM, and you could easily upgrade that thing. Reply
