Quad 8-pin mod protects the $8,500 RTX 5090 you can’t replace from melting

DallasGrave is developing a custom backplate that will enhance the power conversion kit's visual appeal. Notably, it is not limited to the GeForce RTX 5090 or any specific brand. According to the Redditor, they are preparing a range of models for production that cover nearly every variant on the market, including Nvidia’s Founders Edition. However, the creator has not yet revealed key details such as the official release date, pricing, or installation logistics.

TheyStoppedit I have an idea, let's try a cable standard that has been tried, tested, and true for 10+ years now, and see if that fixes the melting…. ….Oh wow, imagine that, no melting. Color me shocked :openmouth: Lol While we're at it, maybe we can try and diagnose with the 3090Ti never melted, but the 4090 did even though they both have the same power draw and same connector…. hashtag currentbalancing I begin to wonder if the melting problem was all a part of the plan the whole time. It wouldn't surprise me tbh Reply

setx If you are going to mod – use EPS connector. Two should be enough for the same 600W. PCI-E connector is far from the best: not all wires actually can carry power, different number of power/ground wires. Reply

ezst036 The RTX6090 should use a regular ATX plug when it arrives. https://i2.wp.com/www.lifewire.com/thmb/6YH6BMOfXnyhMgxQ-qU8yIOFqP4=/2200×1467/filters:fill(auto,1)/atx-24-pin-12v-power-supply-pinout-2624578-bd809482596447b7afa7c63232719560.png?strip=all Reply

SledgeMaximus Well I NEVER plan on buying that expensive of a GPU, or ANYTHING close to that, anyway so don't care. Reply

Yeah, because three separate plugs is a good solution. The fact is, either a new connector, or heaven forbid, a new *slot* for power delivery was needed. The problem is NVIDIA's solution…sucks. Rule 1 when designing something: Make it idiotproof. Reply

MrGrey200 It doesn't matter, we have already done this with 4090 and 5090 before and lack of current balancing still melts the 8 pin mod, not only are the power draws way higher then 3090 but you also have severe design flaws in ALL 4000 AND 5000 series cards, yes even the 4060 burns. Anyone purchasing these two series will be carrying the risk except no one has told them of this, honestly sue nvidia for intentionally shipping a hazard off to customers Reply

Elusive Ruse I bought the Aqua Computer's Ampinel a while back, it actively balances the currents to prevent one single pin from getting too hot. I don't think there's any other device quite like it, even Thermal Grizzly's device is just a monitoring tool without actively doing anything to prevent the imbalance which is the main factor in causing these meltdowns. Ya, a new connector is needed, but at least do it right. Do you notice the 3090Ti and 4090 both have the same power draw? 4090s melted. 3090Ti's didnt. Why? Current balancing. NVidia stopped current balancing the connector and thats when the melting started. When AIBs tried to current balance, NVidia told them they aren't allowed to… like…. hey guys… you aren't allowed to solve the problem, you must leave it broken. Go watch buildzoids video on this…. its all explained. The connector is fine, its the current balancing that needs to be fixed Reply
