thestryker Given the prices that newly manufactured devices have I'm very curious what Valve's strategy will be here. When I saw the pre-order price for the new MSI Claw at Best Buy was $1700 I started looking for PTL laptops just to compare. Virtually all of them now had absurd prices compared to the handful that had appeared at launch. There didn't seem to be any laptops which matched the Claw's specs (12 Xe3/32GB DRAM/1TB SSD) for even as low as $1700. This leads me to believe that while consumer prices have gone up they've been somewhat shielded by time to market and warehouse stock. Due to this I wonder if Valve is going to try to forecast what the long term costs are likely to be and price it there or if they're going to price the stock they have relative to what it cost and then change prices down the road. It definitely seems like a no win situation given that the performance is unlikely to quite match the PS5/XSX and the price was never going to be close to them. Even now with the consoles costing $650 I'd be surprised if Valve launches the Steam Machine at much less than $1000 even if they do opt to start with lower pricing. I hope it's successful, but I just don't see it bringing in a new audience unless it competes better on price. Reply
