habermas Just to be sure: This is a feature that Macs and Raspberry Pis have had for years, right? EDIT: Sure enough. Macs since 2011 and Raspberry Pis since 2022. Reply
olaf Yeah this feature is really annoying, micro$lop does what ever it wants and ruins dual boot or recovery attempts … It will help the non technical annoy it departments around the world Reply
Alastor01 Interesting. But that requires at least working bootloader and WiFi / Ethernet drivers? Reply

thesyndrome This is definitely a step forward, but I wished it acted more like a combined SFC/ DISM command in a GUI where it checks for broken required system files and just replaces those with downloaded versions, so as not to overwrite custom installs that were stable. Reply
S58_is_the_goat Great solution… in case an update ruins windows and you need to reinstall, it'll do it for you 😂 Reply
alrighty_then They said they'd be improving Windows again and it appears they are. Nice. Reply

davidjkay How is this new or finally? Eg Youtube video from 6 years ago on how to install windows 10 from cloud, I remember options like this for long time. Was windows 11 so late to join the party? I remember options like this for all sorts of OS for a very long time, basically ever since most people had internet faster than dial up. It doesn't take much, eg non graphical installer with ability to use your wired network card (or later wifi card) to get a tcp/ip stack going. Reply
davidjkay Eg debian 3.0 in 2002 and similar distributions had network/internet from any active internet mirror, I remember sometimes it was just 1 or 2 floppy disks to get the install going. (if you run installer program from boot sector on hard drive then you risk a virus surviving and infecting new install) 30 years ago if you were smart you could set up a computer to boot or install using network card with "Preboot Execution Environment" even if you had no floppies or cd drive locally. Usually back then internet megabytes cost money so usually made a local mirror and used that rather than "cloud". Reply
