davefb Just checked,, ddr4 is now twice as much as the ddr5 I got 2yrs ago…….. This seems like an interesting idea to make things more affordable, but its already kinda out of date! Right, are there any decent ddr3 cpu combos 😀 Reply

Right, are there any decent ddr3 cpu combos 😀 You joke, but you can still get a DDR3 based X99 motherboard. Its not cutting edge, but you can still get quite a bit of performance out of a setup like that. Unlocked 6 and 8 core Haswell cpu's are fairly cheap, and they perform around Zen 2 or Intel 10000 series when overclocked around 4.4 Ghz. That is still enough performance for a card with performance around the level of an RX 9060 XT or RTX 5060 TI. You definitely need to pay attention to the heat and power, although even there its still not as bad as LGA 1700 can get. Reply

I mean, if you want a CPU that will be bottlenecked with old slow memory on old hardware that could die at any moment without a warranty sure, that's an option. You are better off paying the DDR4 tax and getting things like NVMe and PCIe 4. Reply

But you can throw a platform together for around 100 dollars all in. Ideally you look and try to pickup a used AM4 or LGA 1200 bundle deal for that much, because sometimes you can find them. But you can put together a machine like this all day long with aliexpress and ebay, and it would also be available globally. This particular board even has 5V RGB ports and and a TPM 2.0 header, so you can add it in the future if you wanted to. That said, im sure it suffers from the same issues that all of the other chinese boards suffer from. No functioning sleep mode, and a stripped down bios. Should you do this? Not if you can put something better together. Is it an option in the craziness that is our current environment? Lamentably, yes. $14 https://www.ebay.com/itm/920066464809?_skw=Xeon+E5+E5+2666V3&itmmeta=01M5KTE56K079SW4K2V35NQ2SX&hash=itemd6383c1c29:g:ZKcAAeSwl9tq2Epy&itmprp=enc:AQALAAAA0CHNgUiiE/jQhlDTaMiAde8aGkSbRJqn4SlYrZGUQdma6tTkMGqVtc3wIW96Ke1TveMV4jSG49Bp4kB7YeTR81b60boPZTorIgF2Dck9X1rLDqaz5mKSBDAq7oRaksONSvT/H1fGU7TVqV6yXvBOEt5rMY1aD8FG7321eT2QfPC7OFyud5Pm38Iry+Q9vGJzxe6EQtlKsBR6kpyr3bsNJ78UiDeZ98+h6yQSWL4tw1AxxIojR5FVPdQkjXekRdD4EGUuBT9LvrLo4j70y7uhTQM=|tkp:Bk9SR8rUuPqsaA&LH_BIN=1 $64 https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256813224544466.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.3.42157d3eUTBFl4&algo_pvid=667049c5-73a5-4342-a873-e3c2992f9a05&algo_exp_id=667049c5-73a5-4342-a873-e3c2992f9a05-2&pdp_ext_f={"order":"64","eval":"1","orig_sl_item_id":"1005013410859218","orig_item_id":"1005013163010059","fromPage":"search"}&pdp_npi=6@dis!USD!136.03!62.85!!!902.67!417.09!@21030cd817927363561634722e10bb!12000061091277966!sea!US!0!ABX!1!0!n_tag:-29910;d:c72a5892;m03_new_user:-29895;pisId:5000000218152484&curPageLogUid=32fMKlMis0bA&utparam-url=scene:search|query_from:|x_object_id:1005013410859218|_p_origin_prod:1005013163010059 $8 x 2 = $16 https://www.ebay.com/itm/318564966002?_skw=ddr3+ecc+8gb&itmmeta=01M5KQ4VRK7A4RH9AR78HXFH6D&hash=item4a2bf39e72:g:KOwAAeSwm21qUC28&itmprp=enc:AQALAAAA8CHNgUiiE/jQhlDTaMiAde/uko5MvJofL8EJbC4Sa1U4XJPXL5XU02toVX/eThTIA+t7Al6N4dsndKJ5I7GYOhXlwSBl2ecod/zxRvG9WtIzO0+QgdjOSOcFbRH/oqPBprz1vYeQCNY0f20b+bBsrXuHsknA6CraE9HgzP0DqWiyOjYLWUDB06XEULocoXGr7Fcv3ZXt1masGhe5ePvt5JiPxIVhZSQ0uh7jXKgXrpA0YiSUf5U631xzp8B5wi2fNgFQ5aLBp5F1RPi6S+IKkq7PgPhrbLh9p5bhkgiEybSoVigW/05F/Fp+i7tGln9WIw==|tkp:Bk9SR8y8k_esaA&LH_BIN=1 Total without tax: $94 Reply
