Overall, the results speak for themselves, and this isn't even the first time TrashBench has done something like this. He's previously strapped a CPU cooler on a GTX 960 , though with a lot more grace, and bolted a server AIO on an RTX 3080 . As for this experiment, as long as you're rocking an open test bench and have too much time on your hands, then this wouldn't be the strangest TrashBench project to replicate.

BillyBuerger There have been other reports of similar mods that also have show great results. But the point of it is that the stock cooler was very noticeable when it was running. It wasn't loud but my PC is very quite so I didn't like it. The mod only runs the fan at a minimal speed and is very quite. My smaller CPU heat sink is currently louder and needs to be replaced at some point. The other reason I did this is because I'm a big proponent of front to back airflow in PC cases. Stock GPUs are terrible in that they just dump heat all over the place. Using tower heat sinks on GPUs does a much better job of moving the air out of the case. Especially if you mount your GPU flat so that it's orientated the same as your motherboard. Reply

King_V While never having done such work myself, I've always kind of vicariously loved these wacky kind of mods. That the user has the name "TrashBench" just adds to the flavor of it, and bonus for the crazy improvements that result. @BillyBuerger – I'm probably not quite in the same ballpark as you are in terms of appreciating a quiet PC, but can definitely appreciate what you did with an already low-powered card in the name of silence. Unolocogringo I have been doing "crazy mods" for many years. Using a 2mm copper shim to cool the off die cache of a Slot 1 P3 with a cross-flow dual 40mm fan heatsink. A server southbridge chipset attached to my 3DFX Voodoo Banshee. Attaching heatsinks to the FSB clock generator controllers ,since the P2B days An AMD CPU heatsink on my Ti 4200 with the same crossflow out the back of the case design. Overclocking use to be a major performance boost if you had a good board and got lucky in the silicone lottery. Today binning has taken that away mostly. Only Certified overclockers are given custom bios mods and access to software to change bios settings in video cards. My last "good " overclocker was a R5 3600. She still does 4.4ghz all core @1.28-1.29 depending on motherboard. Today cooling and voltage lowering (go figure) is all we peons can do.To get better performance out of the hardware we have at hand. I still get good overclocks on my video cards. In Afterburner GPU clocks are more suggestive than set numbers like bios modding older cards. So we plebes are left with cooling and suggestive overclocks if your cooling can handle it.🖕 /End rant. / Reply
