Zaranthos I think I still have one. I think I upgraded a family members computer to quad core and still have the dual core. Probably should keep it around for the future battle with Skynet. Reply
Jame5 This article leads with a bit of disingenuous information. It was the Pentium M that broke the "GHz race" when the 1.6GHz mobile CPU was outperforming both the AMD and the Pentium4 desktop chips which were clocked much higher and consumed a lot more power. It blew people's mind that a mobile processor was designed in a way that it's higher IPC overcame the high clock speed/low IPC designs that dominated the desktop landscape at the time. Conroe brought the new core design to desktop. But it was not the CPU that made people sit up and notice that GHz wasn't the end all be all of performance numbers. Reply

Imagine being of those poor people who bought the P4-M, those must've been terrible. Within a year or so they would be completely obsoleted by the P-M which actually had true laptop power consumption numbers while performing the same or better. Reply

The Pentium M was a great chip, but the Core 2 Duo was an incredible advance in the processor space. My software company was one of the highlighted launch partners. We provided high-end clustering software for financial services companies and big websites, and we had 8x of their first stable stepping, all provided by Intel for free, maxed out with RAM (64GB maybe?) etc. Those machines were awesome, and for Intel to get us 8x of them that early (when they were still qualifying chips and most launch partners might only get their hands on one of them if they were lucky), Intel had to put some of their big customers on hold for a while :tearsofjoy: Reply
