PEnns I'll drink to that!! That's one cooling for data centers many would agree with, especially in the farmlands! Reply
passivecool For those who value data over polemic: google some thing like 'comparison water usage data centers vs golf courses USA' and then consider how often you use the internet in comparison to how often you golf. There is room for improvement everywhere for sure. And superior solutions must be demanded, by the locality, so that the implementation is not only shareholder value focused, but benefits the locality– not with empty promises but with hard commitments. IMHO in most cases "yes, but…" will lead to a win-win. NIMBY creates a lot of anger and delivers zero results. Apparently a foreign concept, it is called 'negotiation' And yes you need to be sure about both the integrity and competency of your local representatives, who are typically vastly unqualified for this kind of negotiation. Someone will close this gap with an offer, for sure, that is the nature of capitalism. Reply

I've never ever needed a wrong-answer machine to replace previous algorithms and academic resources that I still rely on. Nowadays, I have to do even more work due to the slew of wannabe intellectuals gumming up repos with their hallucinated garbage. Even outside of that, I had my utility bills bumped up by a flat 10%! AI has been the bane of my existence, and it's only going to get worse if there isn't a cap put on this trash! There isn't any negotiation needed between these tech giants and local governing bodies. These data centers provide ZERO/ZILCH/NADA benefits to anyone that isn't in the billionaire's club, and even that is debatable. These resource sinkholes should be dug up by their roots and tossed in the trash. Reply

You DO understand that absolutely every aspect, every service, every functionality of the internet runs on data centers, right? Always has, always will. I do see the 'how much glue should i put on my pizza' argument regularly. All i can say is that i understand, but fact is, that the competency of AI has doubled every 7 months or so. 2024 you were talking to a 6-year-old. in AI-years (think dog years) it has now finished it's second degree. I have no dog in this fight, no shares in anything, nothing to sell you. You seem a sensible person and a nice guy and I therefore want to invite you and others who share this understandable opinion to reconsider – in your own interest – better sooner than later. AI is not a magic box. It is a tool. Do you expect to drive over something with an orbital sander for 30 seconds and have the result be perfect? No. it takes skill and iterations and time. A tool to learn to use properly. Start a critical discussion with the ai results of your next google search, say what you like, what you dont why and what you want. refine your thoughts with the bot as a sparing partner. Push back and demand pushback. You will find yourself engaged with a mid-range thinking AI that can provide serious benefits and insights. If nothing else, you will afterwards clearer understand your intent. Don't be lazy and don't give up. Don't miss the boat, bro. Reply

Hardly to the magnitude that AI specific data centers have. Previously well maintained databases and search/sorting algorithms required significantly less physical space, processing power, and energy input than AI infrastructure while providing an equal (if not just flat-out better) output. passivecool said: I have no dog in this fight, no shares in anything, nothing to sell you. Said by someone feverishly defending one of the most polarizing and politically influenced fads in the modern era. Ok bud. passivecool said: AI is not a magic box. It is a tool. For who? Certainly not for the layman that simply uses it to generate lifeless images, videos, and music. Certainly not for any self respecting professional worth their salt that doesn't want to constantly sift out garbage prompts. The only people that benefit from this are the richest of the rich. They're strictly motivated by control, even at the expense of capital. The AI experiment has burned BILLIONS, with a capital B, of tax dollars that we can't afford to spend! And for what? Having automated spy cameras logging every single person's daily life? Profiling people at a disgustingly precise scale? Who benefits from this the most buddy? Certainly not the layman. Certainly not the victims of stalkers exploiting their access to such data. I once had pie in the sky dreams of the possibilities of AI too. A self sufficient system able to calculate the best possible solution for problems people wouldn't have the access, or the time to solve. Self sufficient facilities in remote areas, like distant planets, able to set up a fully functional living space for future human habitation. But no, that would be too reasonable of a goal. It all leads to the worst of the worst wanting total control of everyone's life. Reply
