usertests I wonder what the ceiling is for typical PS5 game performance on Steam Deck. Probably pretty high since they are both x86, and PC versions of the same games might already be capable of 720p30 or better on the Deck. It's possible that a Steam Deck 2 launched a few years from now will have no trouble emulating PS5 and PS6, since games could be scaling down to quad-core Zen 6 of the PS6 handheld. The future looks brighter for emulation and console hacking, since the PS6 handheld will be a more interesting target, and Sony appears to be pivoting back to exclusives. Reply

It's not much — it's nothing at all, in fact — but just the proof-of-concept alone is enough to stir up excitement for both Steam Deck and PS5 emulation scenes. PS5 emulation arrives on Steam Deck, Astro Playroom showcased running at 0.6 FPS — milestone SharpEmu development shows promise, despite unplayable… : Read more That's just the intro video, and at .6fps it is not promising. Not only x86, both are Zen 2 AMD cpus, and both have RDNA 2 gpus. An emulator build specifically for the Steam Deck could have very good performance *in 2D*, but the PS5 has over 4x more shading units so 3D games will probably never be good enough. Not like anyone expected that, but it's important to point that out. Reply

Not like anyone expected that, but it's important to point that out. If PS5 targets 4K resolution at 30-60 FPS (using dynamic resolution scaling or other tricks), Steam Deck only needs to hit 720p and at least 30 FPS to be considered playable. 4K is 8.1x the pixels of Steam Deck's 1280×800. FSR4 could be used on the Steam Deck (lol). PS5 has some customizations in both the CPU and GPU that could have unexpected impacts. For example, they modified the Zen 2 cores with a smaller FPU to save die area. The GPU is based on RDNA2 but should have some extra GCN (for PS4 compatibility) and RDNA3 features. What implications these have for emulation, I don't know. Reply
