Virginia county asks all employees, including schools, to conserve power due to AI-driven electricity price hikes — state's 400-plus data centers steadily incre

A researcher at the Energy and Policy Institute thinks that the new gas plant wouldn't be necessary without data center-driven demand, and a representative of the Virginia Energy Consumer Alliance thinks that the added fuel costs are fully passed onto customers.

Dominion does argue that data centers pay more in upfront costs, but it's hard not to see the shape of a feedback loop in which the grid is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding data centers, with regular Joes and Janes left to foot a chunk of the higher bills.

SomeoneElse23 You can't make this stuff up. "data centers" consume the bulk of the power, cause shortages and price increases, and people are told to reduce their electric usage. So much for "representing the people". Reply

King_V New policy – data centers must be contractually obligated to pay the entirety of the power bill of local residents. Not just what they pay over what they used to, but the ENTIRE bill. Reply
